Develop, implement, maintain and manage environmental, health and safety (EHS) programmes at the sites, including conducting lab inspections, site audits, new employee orientation, and regulatory record keeping/reporting, so as to ensure compliance with all legal and corporate requirements.
Lead the promotion of excellence in safety culture and excellence in sustainable environmental performance across Life Technologies (Life) India ensuring EHS standards in India are as for all other Life sites in the globe.
As required, assist the EHS Lead APJ in the interpretation of India regulations. Contribute, as required, to the delivery of EHS globally within the company.
Contribute to Global and Regional EHS goals and objectives (Gs & Os) and set Gs & Os for all India consistent with global and regional Gs & Os.
Develop, implement and maintain systems to secure and to continually improve EHS performance at all sites, creating excellence in a safety culture and environmental sustainability and ensure compliance with all legal and corporate requirements. Main programs include:
- hazardous waste management
- chemical and biological hazard communication
- lab safety
- pollution prevention programmes
- EHS metrics completion
- conduct accident and hazard investigations and recommend corrective action
- conduct and prepare the format for periodic EHS inspections and /or site audits.
This position is also responsible for leading the health & safety committee, the green team and the top sustainability initiatives for India, ie cross-functional productivity initiatives, including waste /packaging reduction.
Identify, evaluate, prevent and control EHS hazards at all sites to ensure legal and corporate compliance. Provide technical knowledge, as required, in the development of EHS controls, programs, and general workplace hazard control strategies
Develop, implement and maintain a system of inspection and/or audits to monitor EHS performance at all sites.
Develop, implement and maintain a system of EHS training for all India employees.
Act as the lead India advisor to the Head of EHS APJ and advise senior management on actions necessary to comply with legal and corporate EHS requirements at their sites.
Act as the “on the ground dotted line” lead for the SDS Authoring Team, liaising as necessary with the global lead.
Act as the lead interface with India regulatory agencies, government departments and vendors on all EHS matters.
Lead the investigation of serious EHS incidents as necessary.
Identify and secure resource needs to meet all legal and corporate requirements at all India sites.
Establish a system of EHS champions for India sites with no full time EHS presence so as to ensure that at such sites all legal and corporate requirements are met.
Manage the site EHS budgets.
May be required to perform other related duties as required and/or assigned.
Nature and Scope
This role manages EHS delivery within India and assists the Head of EHS APJ in delivering regional and global EHS responsibilities as appropriate. The role will advise the Head of EHS APJ and, as required, the India senior management team on EHS.
Works with other managers to establish effective EHS programmes and policies.
This role is responsible for final decisions on administrative or operational matters at India sites so as to ensure effective achievement of company’s Gs & Os.
Exercise judgment within broadly defined practices and policies in selecting methods, techniques and evaluation criteria for obtaining results.
Ensure budgets, schedules and performance requirements are met.
Erroneous decisions will have a serious impact on the overall success of current and/or future company operations.
Regularly interacts with senior management, executive levels of regulatory agencies and government departments on matters concerning compliance.
Has the ability to effectively shift priorities and work at a rapid pace required.
Requires a bachelor’s degree in safety engineering, environmental or industrial hygiene or a comparable field; or the equivalent knowledge and experience.
Must have thorough knowledge of India EHS legislation.
