Position Summary:
This team role supports Thermo Fisher’s recently formed Material and Structural Analysis division and existing Chemical Analysis division covering diverse technologies including electron microscopy, molecular spectroscopy, image and signal processing. Portfolio development through drafting and prosecution is a high priority however product clearance, business-strategic protection of IP, licensing, IP litigation management/support, dispute settlement, and IP counselling will also be required.
This role is located in the Portland, Oregon area at the division’s headquarters in Hillsboro. Additional research and development sites in Europe will also be supported; some amount of domestic and European travel will be required.
The ideal applicant will have a graduate degree in electrical engineering, physics or a similar discipline as well as the technical depth to understand application areas such as semiconductors, materials and life sciences.
Minimum Requirements/Qualifications:
A minimum of 5 years of experience in US patent prosecution and IP legal practice. Experience in US patent litigation, European patent practice, patent portfolio development, licensing, and enforcement in a corporate context is highly desirable. Experience and/or interest in international IP law and international trade would be an asset.
Other Required Skills:
- Demonstrated ability to write clear patent applications, amendments, legal and business documents.
- Demonstrated ability to efficiently prosecute patent applications while maintaining strategic focus of original filing
- Strong oral communication skills.
- Ability to analyze patentability and patent freedom-to-operate matters.
- Demonstrated ability to learn new scientific and technological fields relevant to Thermo Fisher product offerings.
Non-Negotiable Hiring Criteria:
- A graduate degree in electrical engineering or physics or a similar discipline.
- JD in law, licensed to practice in at least one US jurisdiction.
- Registered as patent attorney at USPTO at least 5 years.
