Job Description

Position Summary

Our multi-disciplinary team based in Round Rock, Texas, is looking for a key individual to play a leadership role in the development of analytical instrumentation for life sciences, forensics, toxicology, and environmental analyses.

The position will lead key functional roles within the Product Development Group and work with the Science and Technology team on successful product development projects delivered on time and on budget. You will partner with the leadership team and product management to develop a technology roadmap and vision for the future product portfolio to build new functionality into existing products as well as develop products to address identified market opportunities. The successful candidate must have the ability to liaise, collaborate, and influence stakeholders in a matrix-structured environment on a global basis.


Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Direct, lead and provide technical oversight for a multidisciplinary team of Engineers-Electrical, Firmware, Software-to meet the strategy, needs and priorities of the organization
  • Develop engaged employees through effective employee development, best practice sharing, performance management, and succession planning
  • Implement and lead world class project prioritization and selection process
  • Manage, drive and influence completion of projects to meet deadlines and milestones
  • Develop department budget based on project prioritization and resource leveling
  • Staff and structure the R&D organization in alignment with the business needs
  • Engage with 3rd party technology providers to assess synergies and drive integration strategies
  • Manage, track, report, and justify expenses against budget throughout the fiscal year
  • Update and communicate status of development projects with leadership team
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with the product management team on new and existing product requirements
  • Support operations and service groups to provide technical support related to parts obsolescence, engineering changes, and customer issues associated with existing products
  • Meet quality objectives and engineering standards for new and existing product designs
  • Manage the Stage Gate Product Development Process (PDP) adherence, reporting, and changes
  • Initiate and manage global initiatives such as Value Engineering and Product Lifecycle Processes
  • Participate in writing technology proposals for programs, including requirements, estimates, feasibility testing
  • Establish specifications for products (V&V), procedures (Quality), and processes (Best Practices)
  • Interface with key stakeholders to ensure designs and products meet both customer needs and regulatory requirements
  • Drive design for quality through use of lean methodologies such as DFMEA and PFMEA
  • Identify, lead and manage technical design reviews, technical studies, data analysis and documentation
  • Facilitate the interaction between teams/departments to achieve positive impact on product quality, manufacturability, time to market and overall profitability
  • Create innovative concepts and new ideas for consideration through in-depth technology and market analysis coupled with industry knowledge

Minimum Requirements/Qualifications:


  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering .Master’s degree desired.
  • A minimum of 10 years’ experience, including a minimum of 5 years’ experience leading an Engineering team
  • Knowledge of chromatography and/or mass spectrometry desired
  • Experienced in the state of the art schematic capture and PCB layout software; able to evaluate the group's needs for the future and make recommendations
  • Ability to integrate layout simulation tools (LTSPICE, Hyperlinks, etc) into design work
  • Strong project management skills. PMP certification desired.
  • Excellent communications skills with ability to communicate concepts, opportunities and project plans to all levels of a technical and non-technical organization
  • Proven track record for effectively driving large scale PDP projects and change initiatives while working effectively in highly matrixed organizations
  • Demonstrated experience operating and managing within global organizations
  • Hands-on approach in leading a variety of projects and experiments; with the ability to define development project objectives and priorities
  • Ability to manage effectively in a matrix environment and display credibility in mentoring and forging solid, positive working relationships with R&D teams, marketing groups, business units, division staff, and corporate leadership team
  • Experienced in Agile, Lean Product Development and Design for Six Sigma
  • Understanding of global medical device requirements desired
  • Ability to travel up to 25% on annual basis
