Thermo Fisher Scientific's Materials & Structural Analysis Division (MSD) supplies innovative solutions for microscopy and microanalysis. We provide SEMs, TEMs, and DualBeam™ FIB-SEMs combined with advanced software suites to take customers from questions to usable data by combining high-resolution imaging with physical, elemental, chemical, and electrical analysis across scales and modes—through the broadest sample types.

The Advanced Technology Group under MSD seeks a Senior Scientist to be responsible for the design and development of focused ion beam columns. He/She is required to have an extensive experience in scientific computing, design, operation and troubleshooting of complex lab equipment related to charged particles beam systems including ion/electron microscopy

Responsibilities:
  • Design and simulation of focused ion columns, including charged particles optics, high voltage, electromagnetic fields, magnetic shielding, mechanical design analysis, vacuum design, and material selection
  • Design, perform, and analyze experimental results to prove column performance
  • Maintain substantial knowledge of state of the art principles and theories of charged particles optics and systems, including electron and ion sources
  • Lead and manage small-sized ion column development projects
  • Participate in the development of patent applications
  • Develop and maintain software to simulate and characterize ion beam columns
  • Provide company-wide technical support for ion columns (e. g. to Mechanical Engineering, Systems Engineering, Manufacturing, Service, etc.)

Qualifications:
  • Advanced degree in Physics (PhD or equivalent experience). A combination of Physics and EE degrees is a plus
  • Experience in design, simulation, and operation of charged particles systems, such as FIB and SEM columns
  • Experience in scientific computing
  • Experience using and laboratory equipment including electronics and vacuum systems
  • Experience in troubleshooting complex lab instrumentation
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment
  • Ability to program in C/C++ and C# with .NET 4.0 and Microsoft Visual Studio 2010
  • Ability to maintain and extend existing program scripting languages such as Perl and Python
