Job Description

Position Summary

Our multi-disciplinary team is looking for a key member in the development of analytical instrumentation for life sciences, food safety, toxicology, chemical and environmental analyses. Our work exists at the intersection of precision mechanical and electronic design, embedded firmware, digital communication, software instrument control, chemistry and physics.

A Senior Embedded Software Engineer within the GC-GCMS research and development (R&D) group at Thermo Fisher Scientific will lead aspects of the design, test, and integration of firmware for embedded system control. The role involves collaboration with engineers (other Firmware and Software, Electrical, Mechanical, Quality, Support, Service and Manufacturing), scientists, project managers, throughout the product life-cycle.

This position will require the ability to work independently, prioritize goals, and follow through on tasks to completion. With experience this role will contribute significantly to the embedded system architecture and continue to grow in knowledge to support architecture design.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Design of embedded systems including object oriented design, real-time systems, and hardware/software interfacing
  • Utilize modern code languages and design tools for low level interface, system test, and debug
  • Participate in new product development and introduction (NPDI) projects
  • Identify, evaluate, and solve embedded system issues in both prototype and production systems
  • Maintain detailed records and documentation of all work carried out to preserve the intellectual property of the company
  • Support firmware release
  • Other miscellaneous duties as assigned

  • Make technical design decisions
  • Purchase components / tools as needed to accomplish objectives
  • Identify and promote product, procedure, and process improvements
  • Propose capital equipment purchases for approval by the director of R&D
  • Review and approve engineering change orders
  • Advises on embedded system architecture

  • Uses skills as a knowledgeable professional to work on designs of diverse scope and complexity requiring innovative design, analysis of data, and communication of results
  • Takes initiative to identify opportunities for design, conducts work with little instruction day-to-day, demonstrates good judgment
  • Keeps abreast of developments (internal, technical, competitive, legal, and market related) to ensure the company is pursuing the technologies required to be competitive
  • Estimates time requirements of designs and work to meet deadlines

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or related discipline with 5+ years of applicable design experience, or an advanced degree with 3+ years, or relevant technical high school diploma with 10+ years of applicable design experience
  • In addition, 5+ years of experience in product design for analytical instruments is preferred

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities necessary to perform essential functions

  • Extensive experience developing firmware and software for microcontrollers and embedded operating systems
  • Proficient in C/C++ and assembly language for embedded system development
  • Strong understanding of operating system fundamentals including driver design and support
  • Knowledge of UNIX, Linux, Windows operating systems
  • Expertise with embedded Linux OS
  • Knowledge of Lua programming language is preferred
  • Knowledge of RTOS operating systems for microprocessors (preferred CMX, freeRTOS)
  • Experience on 32 bits micro processors: CISC and RISC (e.g. 68000 and derived, ARM7 and ARM9, ARM Cortex, iMX6) is preferred
  • Knowlegde of firmware developing tools
  • Knowlegde of Ethernet LAN and related debugging tools
  • Knowledgeable of different communications buses (CAN, I2C, SPI, USB, serial)
  • Knowledge and experience with PID control algorithms implementation and optimization is desired
  • Knowledge and experience with stepper motor control is preferred
  • Understanding of schematic drawings is required
  • Proficient in C# or other high level languages for writing test applications
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office tools
  • Good knowledge of written and spoken English is required

Physical Activities: reaching, fingering, grasping, talking, hearing, typing, repetitive motions Level of Physical Requirements: Sedentary work Level of Visual Acuity: able to perform visual inspection of electrical components, assemble, and rework surface mount devices, extensive reading both on paper and on computer displays Environmental Conditions: office and laboratory work environment subject to hazards: moving mechanical parts, high voltage, electrical current, hot surfaces, and chemicals

Travel Requirements

  • Limited domestic and international travel to other Thermo Fisher Scientific sites in support of engineering projects

Interaction with Other Employees

  • Frequent collaboration with other engineers and scientists working within cross-functional teams
  • Clearly present designs, specifications, and results in a group peer review setting
  • Communicate detailed technical information both verbally and non-verbally such that it is easily understood by staff with varying degrees of technical proficiency and common language fluency
  • Facilitate progress on multiple projects on a daily basis through meetings and discussions
  • Prepare reports, proposals, estimates, and illustrations for periodic stakeholder review
  • Able to operate in a multiethnic team environment and work side by side with multi-discipline expertise
  • Participate in a culture of continuous learning and improvement by mentoring and educating peers in specific domain knowledge and best practices
