The Position

FEI’s increasing commercial success in the field of Cryo-TEM Single Particle Analysis (SPA) and Tomography, the need for shorter customer learning curves allows FEI to hire an Application Process Engineer with strong emphasis on Life Sciences.
The use of Cryo-Electron Microscopy (Cryo-EM) in structural biology is on an exceptionally rapid growth trajectory, as the technique is shifting the boundaries in in protein structure determination. As the global market and technology leader, Thermo Fisher Scientific (formerly FEI) is at the forefront of shifting the boundaries of what is possible, not only in academic research, but also in the pharmaceutical industry especially in new drug discovery.
As the technique is being rapidly being adopted in laboratories worldwide, the Thermo Fisher Life Sciences Business Unit (LSBU) is expanding its team in order to support and accelerate the further growth of this business in the coming years.

The Cryo-TEM processes contain many manual actions and span a broad range of laboratory tools and software packages. To make these processes as simple as possible, we are gathering all available expert-knowledge into a dedicated Workflow/App. Based on user-provided sample and tool parameters, this App shows the optimal step-by-step work instructions.

Creating these workflows requires thorough knowledge of both the molecular biology and the laboratory tools involved.

Primary responsibilities include the following:
  • Establish and maintain communication with all stakeholders to keep track of the latest workflow insights (e.g. Thermo Fisher Application Engineers, Thermo Fisher R&D, Customers in Pharmacy/Universities/Research Institutes)
  • Design workflows architecture in order to keep sequences and interdependencies in control and provide customers the fastest route from sample to result (a 3D reconstruction)
  • Document the instructions in our authoring tool, which exports the workflows to the App
  • Validate workflows in a lab environment (e.g. sample preparation, vitrification, electron microscopy)
The Requirements

This customer focused position is ideal for a young professional willing to work in a dynamic, international team and to be exposed to a variety of disciplines (e.g. biochemistry, process engineering, and software).

The successful candidate will possess the following combination of education and experience:
  • Driven
  • Analytic
  • Requires a Molecular Biology / Life Sciences Bachelor degree, or higher
  • Excellent, enthusiastic, clear communication skills, both in writing and speech – proven ability to interact with a diverse audience is critical to the success of this position
  • Excellent interfacing and teaching skills
  • Affinity with software development is a pré
  • Affinity with microscopy is a pré
  • Ability to interact with cross-functional and cross-cultural teams
  • Ability to travel frequently both within Europe and intercontinentally and possession of a valid passport (up to 20%)
The Business Unit Life Sciences interfaces with nearly all departments within FEI and is an ideal starting ground for growing talent.
