Sr. Scientist Position Description:

Mission
:
Charged particle systems are at the heart of Thermo Fisher’s FIBs, SEMs, and DualBeam systems, serving the Nanotechnology market. FEI seeks a Sr. Scientist to be responsible for the initiation, design, development, execution, and implementation of ion column development projects. The Senior Scientist will work with Scientists, Systems and Software Engineers to help develop ion focusing column systems, and is required to have a combined extensive experience in computational physics and operating and troubleshooting complex lab equipment related to ion/electron microscopy

Core Responsibilities:
  • Design and simulation of focused ion columns, including charged particles optics, high voltage, electromagnetic fields, magnetic shielding, mechanical design analysis, vacuum design, and material selection
  • Design, perform, and analyze experimental results to prove column performance
  • Maintain substantial knowledge of state of the art principles and theories of charged particles optics and systems, including electron and ion sources
  • Lead and manage small-sized ion column development projects
  • Participate in the development of patent applications
  • Develop and maintain software to simulate and characterize ion beam columns
  • Provide company-wide technical support for ion columns (e. g. to Systems Engineering, Manufacturing, Service, etc…)
Key Requirements and Qualifications:
  • Advanced degree in Physics (PhD or equivalent experience). A combination of Physics and an EE degree is a plus
  • Experience in design, simulation, and operation of charged particles systems, such as FIB and SEM columns, is highly desirable
  • Experience in computational physics and numerical methods is highly desirable
  • Experience using laboratory equipment including electronics and vacuum systems
  • Experience in hardware, data acquisition, laboratory and process automation
  • Experience in troubleshooting complex lab instrumentation
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment
  • Ability to program in C/C++ and C# with .NET 4.0 and Microsoft Visual Studio 2010
  • Ability to maintain and extend existing programs scripting languages such as Perl and Python
  • Experience with Linux cluster or Windows 2008 multicore server
