Job Description

Position Summary:
Responsible for chemical testing of batch solutions and trouble shooting of solutions out of specification. The individual must have basic laboratory safety and laboratory hygiene exposure as well as foundational chemistry knowledge..

Responsibilities:
  • Make safety the number one priority within the testing lab, every day.
  • Test samples in accordance with established procedures and using all instrumentation required in the procedures, including pH meters, turbidity meters, titrators, spectrophotometer, centrifuge, electrodes, etc.
  • Disposition products (release, rework, scrap) to production based on test results.
  • Record test results in batch records.
  • Segregate, label and dispose of waste chemicals in accordance with company, local, state and federal regulations.
  • Adhere to production testing schedule and communicate any changes in plans resulting from solutions out of specification.
  • Support manufacturing schedule by aiding in hands on production tasks when needed. Be willing and able to support manufacturing packaging operations approximately 25-50% of time.
  • Prepare complex master standards and small scale solutions.
  • Work with planning, quality, and engineering at daily planning sessions as well as when problems arise to plan and solve problems in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Troubleshoot solutions or procedures that do not test to specifications, be prepared to adjust procedures or solutions depending on findings and root cause analysis.
  • Work closely with our manufacturing engineer or our R&D, PhD chemist when solutions are not coming into specification.
  • Write engineering change orders (ECOs) for existing procedures that are found to be inaccurate or incomplete.
  • Manufacture and press mercury pellets to support electrode manufacturing.
  • Calculate adjustments to solutions that do not comply with tolerances.
  • Manage inventories of various lab chemicals, both within SAP and for non inventoried consumable chemicals.
  • Work with quality assurance to ensure equipment is calibrated and PMs are completed on a regular schedule.
Environmental/Working Conditions
  • Exposure to chemistry lab, waste water and manufacturing production floor environments.
Required Skills:
  • Prior lab safety and hygiene training required.
  • Foundational chemistry background and 2+ years experience working in a lab required.
  • Project or team leadership experience required.
  • Ability to handle multi-tasking in a lab and production environment. Day to day lab planning experience preferred SAP experience preferred
  • Experience writing engineering change orders preferred.
  • Experience in lean production environment or lean production methodologies, such as Six Sigma or Practical Process Improvement, preferred.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills required.
  • Must be able to speak, read and write in English.
  • Ability to work in a seated or standing position for an eight hour shift.
  • Ability to communicate by exchanging information in a clear manner with management, co-workers and support functions.
  • Ability to recognize when a process is not in control and needs to be refined.
Qualifications:
  • Education: High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Experience: 2+ years of laboratory experience
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in relevant area
  • Chemistry or laboratory certifications
