Roles and Responsibilities:
The key responsibilities and tasks of the European Transport Manager are:
 Review, analyze, monitor, and manage transportation activity and spend for assigned lanes, shipping sites and carriers; cover all elements of the transportation management, ie addressing costs through rates negotiation and improving costs through process improvements (routing guide, freight bill audit, change of transportation mode, shipment consolidation, …), and improving operational metrics (quality, transit time)
 Design and implement cost containment initiatives. Identify appropriate methods and carriers for imports into the EU from the U.S and Asia utilizing appropriate combinations of ocean, air, and ground carriers in concert with consolidation, and deconsolidation points;
 Design appropriate inbound & outbound road/air networks utilizing a proper mix of Full Truck Load, Less Than Truck Load, and Parcel carriers. Work with internal stakeholders to implement underlying projects
 Work with purchasing/planning to develop the optimal inbound strategy balancing costs and service levels (stock availability, warehouse operations & flow through)
 Optimize efficiency of existing self-managed fleet and analyze opportunities for expansion into additional territories.
 Logistically assess the best way to enter new or expanded customer markets; coordinate across departments to establish appropriate action plans.
 Develop a program for corporate and local level carrier management programs facilitated by formal review meetings and performance scorecards;
 Leverage best transportation practices across the Thermo Fisher enterprise and team up with the global transportation team for this purpose
 Proven ability at transport sourcing and contracting;
 Bachelor degree in supply chain management, business logistics or economics/finance.
 6 to 10 years of transport/logistics management experience preferably with shipper, carrier, and/or consulting firm.
 Proven knowledge in parcel transport with European and local providers;
 Current and working knowledge of all applicable legislations (ADR, IMDG, IATA…);
 Experience managing a complex, multi-modal transportation networks serving both domestic and export markets;
 Hands on Leadership skills to take charge and initiate actions to drive change;
 Superb organizational skills to plan, organize, and set priorities to facilitate timely execution. Able to work in a complex matrix organization with changing priorities
 Comfortable in a structured/procedural environments
 Hands on analytical qualities to make sound decisions decision, through the conceptualization and evaluation of different courses of action to meet or exceed operational goals;
 Comfortable with hands on managerial style, but able to effectively delegate;
 Interpersonal skills to deal effectively with all levels of the organization;
 Work effectively with others in the management team to resolve interdepartmental issues;
 Dynamic, high energy leader with a track record as an effective communicator and uses a collaborative approach to problem solving;
 Strong written and oral communications skills; Fluent in English. Other languages, such as Dutch, German and French, a plus
