The candidate will work with other Thermo Fisher scientists to design and execute experiments in pursuit of the project goals. Much of the work will be hands-on operation of the DualBeam and TEM instruments, developing automated recipes for un-attended tool operation, and analyzing the results of the various experiments.

Responsibilities:
• Preparation of TEM lamella using DualBeam FIB/SEM instruments is an important part of semiconductor Failure Analysis (FA) and process development.
• Examine the fundamental ion-sample interactions that occur during the TEM lamella preparation process, in order to provide critical technical guidance towards the design of next-generation FIB/SEM instrumentation.
• Research topics include the following: amorphous damage layer thickness as a function of ion type, energy, and angle of incidence; differential sputter rates between ions with different substrate types; nanotexturing from non-normal incidence sputtering, and methodologies for minimizing this effect; lamella strain and techniques to minimize lamella warping during the thinning process; and chemical interactions between different ion/substrate combinations; gas-assisted FIB deposition and etching, and deposition material properties.

Minimum Qualifications:
• MS or PHD in physics, physical chemistry, material science, or related field.
• The candidate must have excellent communication skills and organizational skills, as they will need to occasionally summarize and present their results to a wide audience with varying levels of technical expertise.

Preferred Qualifications:
• Proficiency in operating Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), Focused Ion Bean (FIB), and Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM) instrumentation.
• Familiarity with iFast automation software.
• Knowledge of semiconductor processing and manufacturing techniques.
