Job Title: Laboratory Scientist II
Reports To: Laboratory Manager

Position Summary:

The Laboratory Scientist is responsible for carrying out a variety of highly skilled, complex sample processing procedures on a range of specimens requiring specialist knowledge with a high degree of competence and technical skill.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Ensure that the laboratory works within the guidelines of our Accreditation bodies (eg UKAS / CPA, HTA, GLP etc) and to maintain compliance with corporate policies and procedures.
  • Ensure that internal and external quality control processes are scheduled and performed, and that appropriate corrective and preventative measures are taken where necessary
  • Assist in the production, continuous monitoring and updating of departmental standard operating procedures (SOPs), forms and processes
  • Communicate effectively with departmental and inter-departmental staff and take an active role in departmental meetings
  • Actively participate in the induction and training of new laboratory staff and ensure that their training requirements are met
  • Participate in Continuing Professional Development activities and encourage laboratory staff to also participate
  • Required to have detailed knowledge of sample processing techniques including, but not limited to, blood sample fractionation, buffy coat preparation, peripheral blood lymphocyte isolation, DNA / RNA extraction techniques, quantification and qualification of DNA. When new technologies are introduced the post-holder would be expected to familiarise themselves with these and perform some background reading to support their technical skills.
  • Requirement to work within, and train other staff in, the Biological Containment Level 3 facility with Hazard Group 3 pathogens and to ensure all work is carried out to the highest possible standards of Health and Safety and Quality Assurance
  • Ensure that standards of cleanliness and good order are maintained within the laboratory facilities and that daily, weekly, monthly and yearly cleaning and maintenance processes are satisfactorily carried out
  • Ensure that all equipment is used and maintained in accordance with manufacturers guidelines and that all end-users receive appropriate validated training in the correct and safe use of equipment
  • Take an active role in the daily work which may include working with human tissue and samples and samples that have a known pathological risk
  • Investigate and develop new scientific processes as required by clients of FBS in order to secure new business
  • Prepare posters, scientific communications and presentations for both internal and external audiences in order to promote the work of the laboratory
  • Perform general housekeeping of the computer system
  • Gain a high degree of proficiency in the Nautilus Laboratory Informatics System (LIMS) and other software systems used in FBS

Minimum Requirements / Qualifications:
  • BSc / MSc. in Molecular Biology / Cell Biology or related subject
  • Previous clinical/research post experience
  • PC Literate

Essential Skills / Experience:
  • Good numeracy and literacy skills
  • Strong communication skills (verbal & written)
  • Good standard of English (verbal & written)
  • Good attention to detail
  • Up to date evidence of continuing professional development (CPD)
  • Post graduate laboratory experience
  • Good practical bench skills
  • Competent and confident to work with human tissue and high risk specimens in a Class 3

Although not essential, the following skills and experience would be preferred:

  • Experience and knowledge of specialist histology procedures to higher specialist diploma level or equivalent knowledge acquired through experience, Participation in CPD, short courses and ongoing specialist training
