Job Description
As part of the Unity lab Services organization, the Field Technical Specialist is responsible for providing support for the Service Representatives on the ThermoFisher GCMS systems. The ideal candidate will possess technical expertise in Gas Chromatography Mass Spec instruments and software, excellent communication, time management and problem solving skills as well as a passion for the art of Gas Chromatography. Travel could be up to 70% with occasional travel outside Canada for training.
This position is based in Vancouver and covers Western Canada and occasionally Quebec and Eastern Canada.


Key Responsibilities:
  • Perform on-site installation, repair, maintenance, qualification, and validation of GC and GCMS instruments.
  • Configure system settings and options; plans and executes unit, integration and acceptance testing; and creates specifications for systems to meet business requirements.
  • Uses technical expertise to guide FSEs in resolving instrument issues.
  • Provides courteous and knowledgeable response to technical issues, meeting commitments in a timely manner.
  • Serves as a customer advocate and ensures that technical issues are resolved in a timely manner
  • Manages escalation of unresolved technical issues to Factory Support.
  • Analyze complex business problems and make recommendations for automated system solutions.
  • Maintains communication with FSE to ensure understanding of status of a service event in which they are involved.
  • Analyzes review and inspection findings to determine source of problem, and recommends repair, replacement, or other corrective action.
  • Coordinates problem resolution with engineering, customer service, and other personnel to expedite repairs.
  • Provides a communication link between the customer and the company to help ensure that effective service is provided to the customer.
  • Conducts training on the safe operations of the equipment and demonstrates skills to trainees, including both team members and customers.



Minimum Requirements/Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry, Sciences or related field
  • 3 years experience as a Service Representative
  • 2 years experience working with method development in analytical instrumentation.
  • Ability to lift 35 kg without assistance 25% of the time
  • Ability to lift and carry 10-14 kg continuously throughout the day.
  • Ability to bend, squat, stretch, and reach on a daily basis
  • Maintain a valid driver’s license and safe driving record
Non-Negotiable Hiring Criteria:
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Proven ability to diagnose and resolve problems on sophisticated electronic, mechanical and optical instrumentation in a commercial scientific laboratory environment.
  • Ability to read, interpret and analyze component layout drawings, assembly drawings, wiring and labeling diagrams.
