Job Title: EHS Specialist II

Responsibilities:

  • Establish EHS and Sustainability programs and processes that are safe, environmentally sensitive and meet regulatory compliance requirements.
  • Implement global EHS management system including local regulatory requirements applicable to the site.
  • Interface with regulatory agencies on EHS matters.
  • Inspire a culture where employees at all levels take ownership for safety.
  • Engage employees in safety initiatives to eliminate or control safety hazards and reduce risk of an injury or chemical release.
  • Ensure that site’s safety committee, emergency response team, and waste minimization/sustainability committee are established and effective.
  • Work with R&D and Design Engineering/Product Development staff to incorporate Design for the Environment (DFE), supply chain sustainability, EHS product compliance (e.g., RoHS/WEEE/REACh), and other EHS+S aspects and features.
  • May be required to perform other related duties as required and/or assigned.
  • Develop, implement and deliver effective training programs.
  • Ensure Job Hazard Analysis is effectively conducted. Monitor closure of action items.
  • Manage the site Emergency Plan and Emergency Response Team. Provide or make arrangements for First Aid, CPR/Automatic Electronic Defibrillator (AED) and HAZWOPER training.
  • Provide effective Incident Response and follow up.
  • Conduct Incident Investigation and Root Cause Analysis. Ensure injury and illness cases are effectively managed to closure through use of in-house database – Safety, health Environmental Database (SHED).
  • Manage and socialize the site monthly Environmental Health and Safety metrics.
  • Maintain a comprehensive EHS inspection program and track corrective action items to completion.
  • Complete annual waste reports to the state, maintain waste manifests.
  • Participate in EHS audits as appropriate.
  • Perform annual chemical inventory.
  • May be required to perform other related duties as required and/or assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree and/or equivalent industry experience.
  • Requires a minimum of 2 to 4 years of experience in an environmental, health, and safety, related discipline and technical/practical knowledge of EHS regulations, codes, and guidelines.
  • Demonstrated ability to recognize, evaluate, and recommend controls for workplace hazards.
  • Demonstrated ability to determine training needs, organize and/or conduct training.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills required, including the ability to interact with outside regulatory agencies.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with computer applications, including word processing, spreadsheet, and slide presentations required.
  • Technical and practical knowledge of biotechnology, research and development and/or manufacturing is highly recommended, or a willingness to quickly become proficient is required.

Preferred Qualifications:
Professional certification: Certified Safety Professional- CSP or Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) strongly recommended.

Working Conditions:

Many duties are performed while sitting at a desk or conference room, (e.g., operating a computer, using a telephone, or writing and analyzing data and/or reports, attending meetings). In addition, walking or standing within the office area is required for conducting inspections, drills, participating in agency inspections, conducting EHS audits, assisting and may serve as an incident commander in Emergency Response Time (ERT) activities. Preferably able to be respirator certified and be able to wear protective equipment required during emergency response to a chemical spill.
