Embedded Systems Development Intern - Research and Development Department – Madison, Wisconsin
The Embedded Systems Development Internship position provides an opportunity for engineering students who are currently pursuing a computer engineering, electrical engineering, computer science or like engineering degree to get hands on experience working with engineers in a fast-paced embedded systems design environment. The embedded systems intern will contribute to development projects and advance best design practices. The position starts in June, paid working 40 hours per week through August. Opportunity exists for this position to continue through the academic year on a part-time basis to allow for class schedules.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • An embedded systems intern is responsible for providing engineering support related to product development projects including testing and design
  • The embedded systems intern will be called upon to support a variety of engineering activities and may be assigned to a variety of engineering tasks throughout the Engineering department
  • Be involved with many aspects of embedded systems design, analysis and debug tasks
  • Review specifications and designs and provide feedback
  • Learn about embedded systems engineering and instrumentation through daily activities. Accept candid feedback and look for improvements
  • Specific tasks will be tailored to the embedded systems intern’s experience level and abilities
DECISION MAKING AUTHORITY
  • An embedded systems intern works under the close supervision of engineers, project managers, and the embedded systems engineering manager
SPECIFIC SCOPE DATA
  • Specific tasks will be tailored to the embedded systems intern’s experience level and abilities
SKILLS AND ABILITIES
  • Ability to work independently and as a member of a cross-functional team
  • Strong willingness to learn, be mentored, and improve
  • Desire to contribute and improve design of new and existing scientific instrumentation products
  • Strong customer focus
  • Desire to teach other engineers about technology in area of expertise
  • Knowledge of least one embedded systems development tool set such as C/C++, the ability to read schematic diagrams, the ability to use diagnostic tools such as oscilloscopes
  • Aptitude for writing software programs
QUALIFICATIONS
REQUIRED LEVEL OF EDUCATION:
  • Junior level student currently enrolled in classes leading to an ABET accredited degree in a software, electrical or computer related engineering discipline
REQUIRED AREA OF STUDY / MAJOR:
  • Computer engineering, electrical engineering, computer science or like engineering field
PREFERRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
  • General chemistry or greater science knowledge preferred.
