Field Application Scientist (Cell Culture) Mexico/ Argentina/ LATAM

This role is responsible for building technical credibility for the BioProduction cell culture products and services business. The Senior Field Application Scientist will foster technical consultative relationship with clients, offering service and product solutions. Through the consultative relationship, the Senior Field Application Scientist will identify, define and develop recommendations for customer pain points using the latest technologies offered through BioProduction, including but not limited to taking the lead on preparing technical proposals for service opportunities. Key success metrics of this position are customer conversion and service revenue growth.

It is imperative that the Senior Field Application Scientist establishes technical credibility and a perceived contribution to clients and their end goals. Experience and track record highly influence the success of the Senior Field Application Scientist. Clients select Thermo Fisher based on the technology offering, company reputation and most importantly the expertise of the people. The Senior Field Application Scientist is the most visible technical person and critical to the successful selling process, therefore, he/she is expected to share experience in drug development to provide technical assistance and provide solutions to clients’ requests. Ability to effectively interface with all levels inside and outside the company, including senior management is required.

The ability to effectively influence and guide potential clients is required. The ability to effectively shift priorities and work at a rapid pace is also required. Proven relationship building skills required. Excellent communication skills, including writing, articulating, listening, and questioning skills required. The ability to verbally communicate technical strategies and then translate those strategies into an accurate concise written document is critical for success.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Technical Selling of BioProduction cell culture media and cell line products and services
    • Team selling with account managers; present product offerings and service capabilities with supporting applications data.
    • Establish technical credibility with target clients; engage technical dialog with clients with scientific background.
    • Identify pain points and generate solutions or potential projects for clients
    • Work with internal R&D teams as appropriate
  • Support sales process
    • Work/Travel with the broader Industrial and BioProduction account managers. Establish relationships with customers in assigned geographic territory.
    • Develop response on technical questions about products and potential service solutions.
    • Provide technical education to other selling members and share the dynamics and current status of the market with the BioProduction commercial team. Provide industry analysis on Gibco’s and competitors’ products and services.
  • Participation in the execution of BioProduction services.
    • Provide project scope transfer to the operational team.
    • Participate as much as possible in the project team meetings.
    • Be a client advocate and general technical consultant to the project.
    • Participate in insuring total customer satisfaction.
  • Representing BioProduction Services/BioProduction Products in Scientific Forums
    • Attend and actively participate in technical conference to provide Thermo Fisher’s visibility in the market. Develop and present scientific presentations.
    • Provide leadership, guidance and selection of venue for scientific content.
  • Participation in the Scientific, Regulatory/Quality, Marketing, and general development of the BioProduction business.
    • The Senior Field Application Scientist will take on “Special Initiatives”, tapping their specific areas of expertise that will contribute to the further development and growth of the cell culture business. These projects will include:
      • Consultation on quality strategies,
      • Product development or strategic business development activities,
      • Drafting of quality or operational documentation, etc.
    • The Senior Field Application Scientist will be expected to take the leadership role on these Special Initiatives, plan and oversee execution, and achieve pre- determined goals through influencing across the organization. He/she will also be expected to contribute in the strategic planning and execution of new product development as well as launch.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Self-starter with the ability to create and execute plans with minimal supervision. Strong management, project management and planning skills, and comfortable making decisions and embracing changes.
  • Ability to articulate and evaluate multiple complex ideas and align others around a recommended course of action; strong communicator to share vision and plans with others.
  • Ability to work in matrix organizational structure.
  • Outcome orientation and a strong desire to plan to measure the success of initiatives
  • Global mindset. Ability to work with teams across the global and cultural difference.


  • Bachelors or Masters degree in Marketing, Business, Biology, Chemistry, Biochemistry or related discipline.
  • Ph.D. degree is highly preferred.


  • Minimum 10 years of industry technical experience in therapeutic cell culture and process development.
  • Experience in interacting with external clients and ability to present technical content to small and large group of audience.

Travel and Location

  • Willingness to travel as required within assigned territory.
  • This position will be located in Latin America, site or home based.
