Location: Basingstoke, UK

Working hours: 35 hours per week including an early finish on Fridays

This role is based at our Microbiology (MBD) site in Basingstoke. Our microbiology products are used to diagnose infectious disease and identify appropriate antibiotic treatment, confirm that food and beverage products are safe to eat and drink, and ensure that pharmaceutical products are sterile. Our broad range products include prepared and dehydrated culture media, rapid and direct specimen tests, and flu testing kits.

If your throat is swabbed to check for strep throat, microbiology makes the ready-plated culture media on which the swab is tested. Microbiology solutions also Include products used for testing urinary tract infection in patients, and for identifying bacteria such as E.coli and Salmonella in food and potentially harmful microorganisms in water.

Role Summary

Reporting directly to the production manager, this role is the production manufacturing expert that enables the most efficient processes through available systems, such as PPI events and process development. Developing a better understanding of world class manufacturing processes within the production team to enable an optimised production process through the relentless pursuit of efficiency, resulting in higher availability, yield and a reduction in waste.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Organise, implement and maintain production process flow
  • Develop and manage working instructions, world class standards and process documents (SOPs) and ensure they are correct and understood by team members
  • Continually improve the existing operation for increased quality, productivity, efficiency and cost savings
  • Working with manufacturing sciences to investigate operational problems affecting production and implementing solutions
  • Provide manufacturing data using sources such as log books, production control charts and batch manufacturing records to resolve issues without affecting productivity. Provide data on production control charts, reliability, process capability to improve the process and monitor and measure utilising PPI tools such as six sigma and lean manufacturing techniques
  • Identify ways to reduce production costs through recommendations – e.g. new process equipment, equipment justification to improve performance, utilising the approved change control and capital expenditure processes
  • Work with the engineering team to manage equipment development, including effective planned preventative maintenance by the operatations teams
  • Work with other relevant departments to determine product manufacturability; estimated production costs; run time and investigate cost reduction
  • Establish a training and quality culture of continual improvement to support the day to day operations of the team leaders within the production area
  • Resolve customer concerns and audit findings by effectively utilising the area CAPA system
  • Provide cover for production team leaders when absent to ensure day to day metrics are met.
Desirable Hiring Criteria:
  • Experienced Process Engineer within a manufacturing environment
  • Experience of GMP
  • Drive for Results - High level of technical and leadership skills and the ability to train/coach others.
  • OEE and Process improvement experience - reduction of waste
  • Problem Solving -Effective in technical and organisational troubleshooting to root cause.
