Job Title: UK Environmental Health and Safety Manager
Location: Basingstoke
Reports To: Site & Operations Director, Basingstoke
Group/Division: Specialty Diagnostics Group / Microbiology Division

Position Summary:
To implement and manage a health, safety and environmental programme for Microbiology, UK, with responsibility to advise on all relevant issues which affect the company, ensuring that the different sites are legal compliant and are providing a safe place of work for employees with safe systems of work.

  • Ensure that there are appropriate H&S measures in place on each site and that these measures are driving the appropriate behaviour.
  • Provide site managers with advice and assistance regarding their obligations under new and existing UK health and safety regulations.
  • Ensure site managers are aware of their specific duties towards employees and non-employees with regards to UK health and safety regulations and appropriate training is carried out for all employees.
  • Ensure that the company has appropriate Policies and Procedures in place to ensure safe systems and a safe place of work are maintained.
  • Assist site managers in ensuring that all significant risks to health and safety are identified and assessed and that appropriate risk control measures are implemented and maintained.
  • Ensure that accident and incident investigations and remedial actions are completed.
  • Ensure the findings of accident investigations, safety inspections, audits and risk assessments are brought to the attention of management and others who may be affected.
  • Ensure regular health and safety committee meetings are held and ensure that meeting minutes are brought to the attention of all employees and that actions are implemented.
  • Conduct regular safety inspections of the workplace.
  • Conduct periodic safety audits of the business.
  • Review proposals for all new building, plant and equipment to identify potential hazards at the design and contract stages.
  • Inspect new and existing plant and equipment, as appropriate, to ensure compliance with Health and safety requirements.
  • Co-operate with Human Resources, Occupational Health Specialists and other parties as required to ensure that the business is free from risks to heath and safety.
  • To liaise on behalf of Microbiology, UK with external authorities (Health and Safety Executive, Environment Agency etc)
  • Ensure that the business complies with the requirements of the REACH Regulations
  • Work with MBD H&S leaders to identify and share best practice and to harmonize policies and procedures
Minimum Requirements/Qualifications:
  • Qualification to at least Higher National Diploma standard in Environmental Protection
  • NEBOSH Occupational Safety & Health Diploma
  • Broad knowledge of Safety, Health and Environmental legislation
  • Experience of managing Health and Safety across multi-sites
  • Experience of implementing best practices polices, procedures and process across different sites, ensuring consistency in application where appropriate.
  • Travel within the UK to different sites essential
  • Knowledge of the REACH Regulations is desirable
