Job Description

Position Summary:
This position supports the manufacturing process by performing job duties in a safe and efficient manner by applying a finish chemical coat properly to all production part surfaces that are required and routed through the paint department. They will prepare surfaces to be coated to insure a high quality finish that meets or exceeds quality standards and allows our team to meet scheduled demands.

  • Pays special attention to PPE and Job Safety Analysis “JSA” guidelines based on part to be handled, etc., to insure personal and environmental safety.
  • Inspects work piece for scratches, defects, quality related exceptions, and judges condition and action to be taken.
  • Inspects parts for defects, such as loose welds and loose or missing parts.
  • Moves finished pieces to storage area using pallet jacks, two-wheelers, or caster based racks, etc.
  • Operates booths and related processes that coats parts by setting specs, maintaining materials, etc.
  • Places or racks work piece on overhead conveyor by lifting parts and securing them to system.
  • Cleans and finishes assembly products using approved cleaners/chemicals and tools according to PSS book and refers to HMIS/MSDS to insure safe handling and proper PPE equipment is utilized.
  • Works in staging area to pull parts to be processed as instructed to do following production specifications on OPS card.
  • Pulls trigger and directs spray onto work surface to apply prime or finish coat.
  • Straightens parts to repair dents, sands, grinds, etc., in preparation for painting.
  • Adjusts KV (kilovolts) to optimize spray power application to insure proper coating.
  • Applies masking tape, paper tubes, plugs, over parts and areas that are not to be coated.
  • Determines the next step in production by following OPS and places parts in designated area based on distribution needs; material handler, tugger, paint market, silk screen, etc.
  • Lights ovens, turns knobs, and observes gauges on control panel to set specified temperature and air circulation in oven, to synchronize speed of conveyor with action of spray guns and ovens, and to regulate air pressure in spray guns that atomize spray.
  • Cleans paint area by vacuuming, sweeping, mopping with solvents or soap and water.
  • Identifies changes and variation of color and texture of materials and parts to insure quality standards are met.
  • Receives parts and sorts based on process (color, etc.), verifies count, etc., and enters actual data into computer system.
  • Cleans surfaces, using hand scraper, wire brush, sandpaper, etc.
  • Starts pumps to mix chemicals and paints, to fill tanks, and to control viscosity, adding prescribed amounts or proportions of paints, thinner, and chemicals to mixture.
  • Selects and mixes coating liquid to produce desired color, according to specifications, using paddle or mechanical mixer.
  • Inspects parts for millage (thickness), performs physicals at determined intervals.
  • Inspects product to verify that OPS/flow sheet custom specifications have been made according to customer order.
  • Maintains condition of hangers/hooks, by preparing for clearing and utilization.
  • Removes parts from conveyor and examines coating for smears, runs, incomplete painting, and similar flaws.
  • Researches routing of pieces using computer system.
  • Screws specified nozzles into spray guns and positions nozzles to direct spray onto work piece.
  • Secures components and operates lifts, etc., to navigate and move production pieces as needed.
  • Marks work piece with symbol to indicate defective area and type of repair needed.
  • Operates dry off/ bake oven by monitoring and adjusting temperature controls, set speed of conveyor, etc. based on graphic found on oven control panel.
  • Pours premixed paint/powder into reservoir of machine and couples hose to spray nozzles.
  • Starts control panels for power booths by pushing buttons on control panels and check and set air pressures to accomplish quality production goals.
  • Visually compares mixed liquid/powder color samples to standard color sample to ensure that it matches by visually inspecting parts.
  • Fills cavities and dents with putty to attain smooth surface.
  • Implements lock out/tag out process to accomplish job duties such as oven cleaning.
  • Fills MEK containers for other areas by following all personal and environmental guidelines.
  • Marks identifying code on work piece to indicate destination for further processing.
  • Place orders using material request order found on computer system to maintain items needed in daily production to insure constant flow with no down-time.
  • Records number and type of units rejected and reasons for rejection by completing non-conformance document and entering on computer system.
  • Turns sprayer valves and nozzle to regulate width and pressure of spray according to knowledge of painting technique.
  • Uses acid, wire brush, or steel wool to remove rust from metal.
  • Brushes or sprays paint to cover scratches, chips, or repairs in painted finish of items, such as refrigerator cabinets.
  • Punch holes for hanging parts using hand tools such as drill or punch.
  • Determines flow and viscosity of paints and quality of coating visually or by use of instruments as directed by engineering.
  • Holds and maintains fork lift certification when asked to do so.
  • Pours paint thinner into can for distribution to other departments or for use within department.
  • Perform all job duties in a safe manner and obey all safety policies and procedures
  • Perform all job duties consistent with the Code of Ethics and the 4-I Values
  • Perform all job duties within ISO standards
  • Work on Continuous Improvement and support all PPI, Keys and Lean projects
  • Perform other duties and cross training as assigned
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Education Requirements: High School Diploma or G.E.D
  • Experience Requirements: One to three years experience in manufacturing, construction or industrial setting.
  • Previous experience as industrial or manufacturing painter is preferred.
  • Knowledge: Must be knowledgeable in the application of powder coatings and solvent born coatings and the equipment used in those applications. Also must be knowledgeable in the preparation of substances to be coated and the proper coatings used on those substances.
  • Physical Demands:
    • Ability to stand, bend, stretch, reach, lift repetitively to accomplish paint production and other company-wide production goals.
    • Ability to work in hot, cold, dusty, elevated, noisy area where foot and automated equipment movement is present.
    • Ability to compare color of paint supply with color chart to confirm part is in spec.
    • Ability to frequently life up to 50 lbs.
    • Ability to lift bulky, shifting boxes/bags of materials weighing up to and over 60 lbs manually or with assistance.
    • Ability to maneuver paint department pieces by hand in a repetitive manner conductive to efficiency, job specifications, safety, and quality goals.
  • Other Skills: Ability to work in team environment and communicate well with others.
  • Computer Experience: Ability to maintain basic knowledge of SAP Operating System and Windows Operating System.
  • Minimum assessment on ACT WorkKeys of Observation Level 5 and Teamwork Level 4 will be preferred.
