Application Scientist – Structural Biology

The Mission
The NanoPort team, within the Sales and Service Division (SSD) Organization, runs a state-of-the-art electron microscopy lab, supporting FEI’s account managers and external customers in the Science and Industry markets. Key deliverables of the NanoPort team are:
  • Carefully prepared product and workflow demonstrations, based on a solid understanding of customers’ application needs, provide evidence of the unique value of FEI’s solution in a highly competitive market.
  • Customer applications training and support provide unparalleled value, allowing users to obtain the best possible results and value from their instruments in the shortest possible time.
Both elements are key deliverables of the NanoPort team and are critical to the success of FEI and its customers.

The Position
Building on a solid scientific foundation combined with a strong commercial interest and excellent communication skills, the Application Scientist works closely with top specialists in electron microscopy at leading research institutes in Life Sciences, ensuring that early adopters of new FEI technology become successful in obtaining optimal results from their microscope.
The Application Scientist also serves as a scientific ambassador for FEI on site at the customer location. Operating at the cutting edge of science and nanotechnology, the Application Scientist is responsible for advanced customer training and the (scientific) results achieved, as well as for providing the customer with an efficient inroad into FEI.
Besides this on-site applications support, the Application Scientist may also perform product and workflow demonstrations, and provide feedback to R&D and Product Management steering and evaluating (testing) new products, software updates and new accessories.

Specific deliverables associated with this opportunity include
  • Facilitation of tool acceptance in the FEI production facility and support to installation and acceptance at customer sites;
  • Act as Equipment Owner while on assignment at customer location
  • Deliver content for application notes in close collaboration with FEI marketing and support customers in achieving publishable scientific results;
  • Execution of demonstrations and sample analysis, supporting sales opportunities – in the FEI NanoPort lab or at customer sites;
  • Conduct customer training and translate customer needs into workable solutions;
  • Multiple supporting tasks such as applications support for new product development, contributions to manuals and release notes, experimental research to advance applications knowledge, presentations at workshops and conferences; scientific publications.

The Requirements
The successful candidate will possess the following combination of education and experience:
  • Typically requires an advanced degree (PhD) in Biological Sciences, Biochemistry, Biophysics or Structural Biology with strong post academic background demonstrating expertise in critical microscopy application areas (sample prep, cryo-EM data collection and processing, …)
  • Typically requires approximately 5 years of experience in high-end electron-microscopy in an advanced research (academia or industry) environment
  • Proven record of published peer-reviewed articles and papers
  • Experience interacting with customers, service, marketing and R&D
  • Confident and determined
  • Capacity to work independently as well as in teams
  • Strong communicative and inter-cultural skills (verbal and non-verbal)
  • Very frequent traveling (up to 70%)
