Thermo Fisher Scientific acquired FEI Company in September of 2016 as a part of the Analytical Instruments Group (AIG) in the newly-formed Materials and Structural Analysis Division (MSD).

The Position

As a Systems / Workflow designer, you will work in a group of about 25 enthusiastic professionals that strive to continuously improve their next generation TEM products in cooperation with other disciplines, including Marketing. You will report into the sample positioning competence owner. You will work closely together with project managers, architects and technical experts from various technical backgrounds for optimal cross-functional alignment. You combine focus, technical vision and the ability to overview several complex projects in a cross-disciplinary setting. You will have a large influence not only at the start of the project by making conceptual designs and setting specifications but also by monitoring projects and motivating & inspiring engineers. You will be responsible as a Systems / Workflow designer for the modules which make up the Life Science Workflow.

Specific responsibilities are:
  • Development of high tech systems and/or Mechatronic designs which work under Vacuum and Cryo conditions, within cost, specification and time
  • System design & integration, error budgeting and design modeling
  • Support, steer and motivate internal and external designers(suppliers)
  • Define new applications, methods and processes
  • Expand performance requirements


You have a Masters or equivalent in mechanical, mechatronics, system/ motion control or a combination that shows the relevant expertise. You have professional experience in high tech industry:
  • At least 3- 5 years of relevant experience and proven results in a similar role. Proven responsibility for complex designs.
  • Proven experience with high tech designs. Demonstrate and documented abilities regarding System design & integration, error budgeting and design modeling
  • Experience with Cryo and Vacuum is a pre.
  • Eagerness to get understanding of other relevant disciplines like physics, software etc.
  • Must have demonstrated and documented ability in these areas
