Job DescriptionJob Title: Category Manager Chemicals / Procurement-Sourcing Specialist IIIReports To: Manager, European SourcingGroup/Division: Global ChemicalsCareer Band: 6Track: ProfessionalLocation: Geel, BelgiumNo. of Direct Reports: 0Day/Shift: 1stFLSA Status: ExemptPosition Summary: The position will be a strategic and primary sourcing position that will run and bid sourcing and quoting processes to meet efficient supplier and spend management. Primarily focused on Chemicals, based in Geel but with multi-site responsibility, mainly in Europe, and global interaction.

  • Act as a change agent supporting and enabling the execution of change initiatives across the supply chain/ value chain inclusive of sourcing, procurement, planning, manufacturing, logistics, and distribution within the Supply Chain. This position provides Global project management support to a defined grouping of mainly Chemicals but also including Freight and Indirect Material. In addition to sourcing savings projects, product selection processes consistent with Thermo Procurement practices and metrics is also part of the job. The category manager will research various markets as well as potential suppliers, product specifications and resources. The Category manager will issue RFQ’s , RFI’s , Global Contract Management ,conduct Global supplier analysis, evaluate potential suppliers from a total cost of ownership model, maintain category plans and strategies. The position will also be involved in coordinating quarterly business reviews and conduct Global supplier management for the category. The Category Manager, Strategic Sourcing is responsible for the company’s Global strategic sourcing program for Chemicals, Freight and Indirect Material including the selection, deployment, and management of an integrated set of strategies, tools, processes, and people on a cross-functional basis to execute a portfolio of strategic sourcing projects at Global level. The central challenge of the position is to obtain materials and services at the lowest total cost of ownership while meeting key business objectives such as safety, service, quality, schedule, and insuring the security of supply.
  • For “Local and Multi sites European” and “Global” projects, this position represents the Global Sourcing Group on project teams, working closely with Marketing, Sales, Finance, Materials Management, Production, Supply Chain, QA/QC, R&D and Legal as necessary.
  • For all projects ensure that:
    • project objectives are clearly defined and communicated
    • cross functional team is organized
    • technical, logistical, and supply chain requirements are identified
    • meetings are conducted efficiently
    • project timelines are developed and used as a tool throughout the project lifecycle
    • risks and contingencies are identified and communicated
    • senior management is kept aware of project status, resource conflicts, and any project risks that arise
  • Identifies root causes and corrective actions for project deviations, including facilitating problem resolution between initiators and implementation teams.

Minimum Requirements/Qualifications:

  • Sourcing Product selection requirements
  • Knowledge of global Chemical market and global suppliers
  • Drive RFI’s and RFQ’s activities from a pre-award perspective to final implementation
  • Effective influencing and negotiating skills
  • Results oriented, with strong commercial acumen; demonstrated ability to create and capture savings opportunities; always approaches savings from total cost of ownership perspective
  • Highly experienced negotiating prices, complex terms and conditions, and incentives for major agreements
  • Strong analytical skills, spreadsheet work ,pivot tables and summary information
  • Spend Management and Contracting strategies implementation
  • Strong presentation skills and a win win philosophy across both internal customers and the supply base.
  • Demonstrated ability to understand key contract terms and conditions and the ability to work with the legal teams to drive contract creation and negotiations
  • Strong project management skills, including stakeholder, timeline, and meeting management skills
  • Track record of transforming supply chain processes and leading the continuous improvement of strategic sourcing programs
  • Comprehensive, practical understanding of supply chain policies, procedures, processes, and systems
  • Able to work up, down, and across large organizations; connects with all levels; easily accepts constructive input from others
  • Excellent teamwork and collaboration skills; strong listening skills; naturally inclusive in decision making environments
  • Skilled with internal customers; ensures frequent stakeholder communications for input and alignment; well-honed “radar” for situations requiring incremental stakeholder management
  • Able to build long-term trusting relationships with business unit leaders, engineers, and field/operations personnel
  • Strong communication skills, including written, verbal and presentation skills; credible with internal stakeholders and external audiences; comfortable meeting with/presenting to executives and senior management
  • A flexible, dynamic, self‐demanding and proactive individual; able to motivate themselves, suppliers and the cross functional team members and others
  • Support the Regulatory Team by understanding and managing communication with the suppliers on topics related to REACH and other issues.
  • Travel expectations: max. 10%, mainly within Europe

Education and Work Experience:

  • Minimum 7 years in Strategic Sourcing or equivalent
  • Minimum of 7 years experience in an manufacturing or equivalent environment
  • Minimum of 5 years proven capability leading cross-functional project teams.
  • Skilled in the use of Excel, Word, and PowerPoint
  • Worldwide chemical market experience a plus
  • Knowledge of e-procurement a plus
  • Contract Management a plus
